Genny Zero: technology and design for a new mobility experience

Developed by the Swiss company Genny Factory SA, the two-wheeled self-balancing medical device combines proprietary technology with a human-centred approach. A journey recognised with the Compasso d'Oro ADI 2026.

Genny Zero was created to offer people with motor disabilities a different personal mobility experience. The project integrates a proprietary self-balancing system with a design that places the relationship between person, device and environment at its core.

Two parallel wheels and control through shifting of the centre of gravity characterise how it works: the system dynamically maintains balance, while the user manages movement through the body. The retractable central steering allows directional control and facilitates boarding and alighting.

A project born from personal experience

The story of Genny is tied to that of Paolo Badano, founder of Genny Factory SA. Following a road accident that led him to use a wheelchair, Badano began searching for new possibilities for his own mobility.

An encounter with self-balancing technology gave rise to an insight: applying its principle to a device that could be used while seated. From this idea, a research and development journey began that, through several product generations, led to the creation of Genny Zero.

The founder's direct experience helped steer the project towards concrete needs, combining functionality with attention to form, everyday use and the identity of those who use it.

Recognition for design

Selected for the ADI Design Index 2025 and awarded the Compasso d'Oro ADI 2026, Genny Zero brings the theme of personal mobility into the debate on contemporary design.

The project considers design an integral part of the device: from the layout of controls to the ease of accessing the seat, through to the relationship between the product's forms and the person.

The evolution of Genny Zero

The development journey continues with the new XR Kit, which introduces wheels with alloy rims and an increased tread, new protective mudguards and a dedicated software interface on the touch monitor.

The configuration was developed to broaden the range of uses of Genny Zero on more demanding surfaces, acting on the ground footprint, the track width and the protection provided by the mudguards.
